Depending on the installation mechanism, there are three types of indoor gates you should know about:
Freestanding Dog Gates
This one is the easiest to install because… well, it doesn’t require any installation!
Freestanding dog gates can be set down wherever needed, and some may even come with rubber grips on the bottom for extra support.
If you need to move it somewhere else, it’s as easy as it gets.
This type of dog gate might be useful while your dog’s still a little puppy, but once it grows stronger, you’ll realise how flimsy freestanding dog gates really are.
Pressure-Mounted Dog Gates
Most people like the freedom that freestanding dog gates offer, but want a bit more stability.
That’s what pressure-mounted gates (or tension gates) are made for.
This type of dog gate can be attached to surfaces using rubberised tension knobs, alongside a bar that adjusts with the width of the gate until it’s all secure and stable.
This allows you to easily install and remove your gate without any drilling or damaging your doorways - perfect for when you’re renting or simply don’t want to make permanent changes.
However, don’t forget that there are no screws holding your gate in place.
No matter how tight it feels when you fit it for the first time, you may not realise it has lost its grip until it’s too late.
Because of this, you should never install it at the top of your stairs - your dog may lean on it as it gives way and risk injury.
Hardware-Mounted Dog Gates
Hardware-mounted gates are the gold standard for security.
They are permanent fixtures that come with bolts and brackets you can attach to walls, keeping the gate fully secure.
If your dog is bursting with energy or simply larger in size, this option will provide the best safety.
The one downside is - once you’ve fixed this gate in place, you won’t be able to move it again.
If you need to add an extra layer of protection in multiple places around the house, you’ll need to purchase multiple gates - which can add up the costs quite a bit.
How Dog-G8 Combines Security and Flexibility
A no-screw pet gate that pressure fits into the space may not be able to withstand the force of larger or energetic dogs, so it is not a recommended solution where safety is of the essence.
However, wall-mounted gates are permanent fixtures, so it's not a good choice if you want flexibility.

Installation is one of the biggest concerns we hear from customers, particularly from people who aren't confident using a drill or don't want to screw into a particular surface.

Where the surface is suitable for adhesive fitting, customers are often much more confident once they realise drilling isn't their only option.

- Secure locking - this is the feature I consider fundamental. We've developed our locking mechanisms over time as customers have increasingly used Dog-G8 across hallways, doorways and stairways, where a dog may be behind the barrier without its owner standing beside it.
- Concertina design - the gate is a retractable, folding mesh of steel that can be docked and undocked from its brackets.
- Versatility - you can buy extra brackets to move a single gate between different locations (e.g., from the stairs to the front door).
Standard vs Retractable Dog Gates
Depending on the way you open them, there are two types of dog gates to consider.
Standard pet gates feature a swinging gate that simply opens as a standard door.
Retractable pet barriers, on the other hand, fold to the side, allowing you to retract them when you don’t use them for extra convenience.
One thing I've learned is that flexibility shouldn't automatically be confused with weakness.
In fact, the flexibility of our design is intentional.
With a rigid barrier, we've seen dogs put their paws against the top and use that solid surface to try to clamber over.
Our flexible panel design doesn't give them the same rigid perch point.

They work just fine for small, calm dogs, however a bigger or more determined dog might be able to push right past them.

For the "escape artists" and strong chewers out there, a metal gate made of steel or aluminium is definitely the way to go.
These are incredibly durable and can stand up to a lot of wear and tear, providing the extra strength that wood or plastic just can't match.
While they are a bit heavier, they offer total peace of mind for owners of large or very active dogs.
