WITH animal safety at the forefront of their thinking and in particular dog safety, entrepreneurs Julie and Peter Maxted have launched a door gate through their business The Dog-G8 Company.
The couple went looking for a simple and cost-effective way of resolving the problem of dogs running out of open doors, seeking a product that would keep them safely behind the door and also protect anyone coming to the door. They looked at various types of ‘gates’ but felt they just didn’t deal with the issues – so they decided to develop their own safety gate.
After many months of in-depth development and working with a Peterborough-based engineering company, the Dog-G8 was born.
“The beauty of the Dog-G8 is that it fixes really neatly to the front door of a house and it is very attractive in appearance.” Said Julie.
Julie and Peter say they are ‘very proud’ that their Dog-G8 is a British-made product.
]]>WHAT IT IS: The Dog-G8 is a slender, portable metal safety barrier that attaches to doors and folds in and out like a concertina as they open and close. It's like a baby gate for dogs, to stop them getting out of the house and into the hands of thieves. The barriers are 88cm high and the brackets can be attached to any uPVC door with high-grade adhesive tape, or screwed into a wooden door or post. The gate can be detached from the brackets and used elsewhere. When the door opens, the Dog-G8 does too and your dog is kept inside.
ON TEST: I'm not aware of any dogs being stolen near our house but the postman tolerates our spaniels trying to get in his van every morning, so this is just what I need. If we manage to get away this summer, I'd definitely take one. They are perfect for a holiday let, where I might worry about opportunistic thieves.
STEWART SAYS: This is a great way of keeping dogs in the house, so you know where they are while still being able to open the door. Dog thefts aside, it's also excellent for preventing them getting onto the road. 7/10.
]]>Having built up two successful pet related businesses, puppreneur family, The Maxteds, from Horsham in West Sussex, have recently launched their third pet business.
Peter and Julie, plus their now grown-up children have always been a pet-loving family. It was in 2002 that Julie started a pet sitting business when her children were younger. The business greew and in 2008, when husband Peter retired as a firefighter, they decided to develop it into a franchise business and The Pets, Homes and Gardens Company was born www.petshomesandgardens.co.uk. They now have twenty-five franchises across the UK, all the way from Whitley Bay to Plymouth, and it continues to grow.
Daughter Charlotte has been working within the petsitting side of the business since she was 16 years old. Now a 29 year old mother of two, Charlotte continues to work in the business taing care of the social media side of the businesses and pet visiting.
Son Chris graduated from university last year and having undertaken a Management Degree, he is putting his skills to good use in the development of the Dog-G8 Company. He is progressing the on-line sales of Dog-G8 and helping with the social media and marketing too.
The family and their franchisees have seen the huge increases of more daily calls to homes from postal workers and the online shopping couriers and in turn, the dangers when looking after dogs and in particular, puppies. With this increase, it was becoming apparent there was a massive safety issue for both dogs and the callers to the home. The flash point being every time the front door was opened. On average, eight postal workers are bitten every day in the UK, and the other delivery companies and couriers also face the same problem.
So Peter went looking for a simple and cost-effective way of resolving this issue, as well as keeping the dogs and puppies safe behind an open front door. He looked at various types of 'gates' designed to try and stop this happening, however, he felt just didn't deal with all the aspects of this problem enough. He therefore decided to develop his own safety gate. After many months of in-depth development, and also working with a Peterborough-based engineering company, the Dog-G8 (www.dog-g8.com) was established.
The beauty of Dog-G8 is that it fixes really neatly to the front door of a house and it is very attractive in appearance. DOg-G8 will stop a dog or pup running out every time the door is opened, by keeping the pup safely behind a physical barrier. IT also protects the caller at the door, which is really important. Peter has designed Dog-G8 to be easily removable when not required, and fully modular should you wish to extend DOg-G8 wider. Dog-G8 Plus has been developed to help with stairs and to be used as a room divider.
The Dog-G8 Company knows it has developed a 'game-changer' regarding the safety of dogs and puppies to any home that has a Dog-G8 fitted, as well as safety for the callers. The family are also very proud that Dog-G8 is a totally British-made product.
]]>The Dog-G8 has announced the launch of a new dog gate to be used inside the home. The product can be used on the front door due to its concertina style, and also comes with extra sections that enable it to become a stair gate or room divider.
Business owners Julie and Peter Maxted said they decided to launch the product after looking for a "simple and cost effective way of resolving this issue of dogs running out, as well as keeping the dogs safe behind an open door."
While they looked at carious types of dog gates on the market, they said other products "just didn't deal with all the aspects of this problem enough."
The new safety gate launched by the business comes after "many months" of in-depth development, working alongside a Peterborough based engineering company.

It added: "The Dog-G8 company knows it has developed a 'game changer' regarding the safety of dogs and callers to any home that has Dog-G8 fitted. They are also very proud that Dog-G8 is a totally British made product."
]]>"This dog gate is amazing, worth every penny to keep our fur babies safe from running out the front door. Easy to install in minutes a must for all dog owners, peace of mind, really fast delivery, effective communication. I would recommend the Dog-G8 to every dog owner – it's so unique, a great design, much better than a baby gate as it folds away next to the door.'
"We use our Dog-G8 as a room divider in our hallway and could not be more pleased with this product and the service provided by Julie and Peter. Dog-G8 offers use peace of mind knowing that our puppy, Wilson, is safe roaming about the lounge and garden. Whether it be the children popping in and out whilst playing on their bikes or myself lugging in the oof shoping, we don't have to worry about the safety of WIlson when the front door is open. But the best bit for us is Wilson can see everything that is going on so that he doesn't feel like he's being left out and it's all thanks to Dog-G8! I would highly recommend this product to any puppy or dog owner."

]]>Do women need a ring on their finger?
YES 'It's a symbol of the life we've shared'
Julie Maxted, 58, lives in Horsham, West Sussex, with her husband, Peter, 61.
My wedding ring means everything to me, and it doesn't matter what I'm doing or where I'm going, it never leaves my finger. My yellow-gold sapphire ring is a symbol of everything Peter and I have together - 34 years of marriage and three grown-up children.
After wearing my engagement and wedding rings for three decades, I'd lost a few diamonds from them and they'd started to look tatty. So, for our 30th anniversary, Peter had them melted together and combined with sapphires from a pair of earring he;d bought me when we were first dating, to create the beautiful one I wear now. I love it.
I sleep with it on and I'd feel naked going out without it. Peter only takes his off to do things like decorating or gardening, and leaves it on his bedside table at night.
If he ever stopped wearing it, I think I'd feel upset. But it's not about feeling insecure - I'm very happily married - it's about the importance of wearing a ring when you're married to symbolise the bond you share. It's a historical symbol, deep-rooted in our culture, and I definitely take the wearing of one seriously.

]]>Julie Maxted, 58, runs dog gate company dog-g8.com with her husband Peter, 61, from their home in Horsham, West Sussex. The couple have three grown-up children, a seven-year-old dachshund Jack and a cat called Benjy. She says: JACK is a much-loved member of the e family and is very cheeky.
In fact, thanks to him and our tabby y cat Benjy, it’s like Tom and Jerry y around here — Jack will sit by the cat t flap so Benjy won’t come in, then n Benjy will dab Jack with her paw and d he squeals like a girl! They wind each other up.
We’ve had him since he was a puppy but when he was about four, he kept having fits and we thought we were going to lose him.
His eyes would go glassy, he’d start shaking and saliva would come out of his mouth. He looked quite frightened and all we could do was cuddle him until it subsided. We were so worried — he’s so dear to us.
He went to the TV Supervet — Noel Fitzpatrick’s practice — to be tested and he was diagnosed with epilepsy. Luckily, there was nothing more seriously wrong with him.
He’s not on any drugs so we went online to see what we could do for Jack and we found case histories of dogs where going grainfree really helped. A family friend also suggested it.
It’s not known why such a diet would help epileptic dogs, but since we switched Jack’s diet to Butcher’s grain-free recipes, usually the wet
Peace of mind: Julie with her beloved dachshund Jack tripe varieties in tins, it has helped him enormously. After about three or four months of his diet, we realised the food was beginning to work because he hadn’t had a seizure for a while. From having a fit every couple of weeks, he now only has about one every six months. They’re no less severe but they’re far less frequent. We had no idea a diet could have this effect and we would not go back. While Jack’s epilepsy is never going to go away, it has given us peace of mind.
EMMA’S VERDICT:
Whatever has made this difference it’s clear the result is good. Gluten-free diets are known to help Border terriers with a syndrome like epilepsy but that doesn’t need to be grain-free, just gluten-free. If you do go grain-free, speak to your vet about the brands which are most reputable.
We are finding many people with disabilities love our Dog-G8, as it allows the front door to be opened easily, without the added worry of 'where are the dogs!'. Dog-G8 is strong and reliable and very easy to fit, you can use our superb stick tabs on UPVC doors, so no screws required. Dog-G8 is also fully manufactured in the UK.
One Lady who purchased a Dog-G8 is Vivienne and she says:
"At present I have an Assistance Dog called Elsa and as she has now passed 10 and I have to think about the future. Elsa is a Goldendoodle and last year I agreed to purchase a puppy of the same breed which arrived in March. I bought the Dog-G8 in anticipation of the arrival of our puppy. It seemed to us to be most suitable to stop the puppy rushing out of the front door. If someone knocked.
My husband found it quite easy to fit especially following advice from Peter Maxted, the designer of the device.
We are sure it will do what we want but, as we collected the puppy the day the lockdown instructions were issued, no one has actually yet knocked at our door"
]]>When not in use, Dog-G8 folds flat and sits neatly close to the door; it can also be easily removed. It fits simply to all types of doors.
